Judges Critique

Thank you to the committee for the invite to judge the club show, and to the exhibitors who brought their dogs for me to assess.

This breed of dog is where I started, some 30- odd years ago, and it was of great interest to see where it is today.

The breed appears to be very varied indeed, and overall, most the exhibits are a lot larger and heavier than they use to be. On the smaller exhibits, there were issues with construction and confirmation. I found a distinct lack of neck and upper forearm on quite a number, and I think the Puff exhibitors need to pay attention to straight stifles.

The neck plays a vital part in this breed, it gives the dog the elegance and grace and to me, sets them apart from most other toy breeds.

On a good note, I was very pleased with the great improvement in mouths and temperament.

Coats were good, nice silk veils and not the thick wool that was about a few years ago.

Class 1 Baby puppy dog. 2 (2)

1st Boden’s Pufflepaws Somnis De Reis Gemadar. Mahogany H/L dog at 4.5 months. Attractive head that was balanced. Good dentition and bite. Nice body type and good shape. Level top line with good tail set and carriage. Correctly angulated. Moved well

2nd Routledge’s Pufflepaws Dream To Reality. This was a lovely Cream and whit puff with a lovely head correct eye shape and good mouth. He has made well, with good angulation and was covered in the correct veil coat. So sad that he was not happy for me to assess him today, but I will watch with interest as I believe as his confidence grows, he will do well

Class 2 Minor Puppy Dog. 2 (1)

1st Watson, Dame Karamouche Pandamonium. Black and white puff boy at 8 months, doesn’t need to grow anymore and has yet to body up. He has a nice head and a lovely dark eye of almond shape. Good scissor bite. Reasonable neck and a good topline. Would like more angulation on front and rear. Very well presented with a soft, clean and silky veil coat. Moves ok.RBPD

Class 3 Puppy Dog, 2 (2)

1st Parker’s Doonbeg Mahogany Magic at Khatira. A very balanced H/L mahogany boy with lovely skin. I liked his size. A quality young man with a chiselled head, Tapered muzzle and clean lips. Correct scissor bite and dentition. Nice arch to a good neck and laid-back shoulders. Level topline leading to well set tail. Decent rib for a youngster and good angulation at rear, which all leads to the correct brisk movement with reach at front and drive at rear. BPD

2nd Boden’s Ravana’s Miracle Avokaduh forGemadar (impCZE) Another attractive young male who was also very balanced with good skin. He has a lot of the qualities of 1 but was a little close behind at this stage in his development and a slight curl to his tail.

Class 4 Junior Dog 4 (3)

1st Bartlett’s Exotic Spirit VVildeers Dragon Avec Michadaine I did like this dog a lot! If only he let his spirit show a little more. He is what I would describe as a grizzle coloured puff of a lovely size and lovely breed type. He had a very pleasing head of a nice shape. Lovely erect ears, set well on head. Beautiful dark eye. Excellent dentition and bite. He was a pleasure to go over, with arch to adequate neck, a good lay of shoulder and a good body and bone under a veil coat and all in what I would describe as correct size. He was a pleasure to watch on the move, free, with great reach ad drive. He came to life on the move. RDCC

2nd Peacock’s Pufflepaws Yes Sir I Can Boogie with Iapea Attractive grey/white puff of a nice size. Erect ears set well. Nice shape to head but eye a little round. Preferred the overall construction of 1. Level top line and moved ok.

2nd Lock’s Chestnutcres Beam Me Up Nice correct sized dog that looked to be a true hairless. He has a pleasing head and correct shaped eyes. Good mouth and lovely skin. Shown in good condition. Loved his ears! Generally a nice shape and moved well.

1st Gwynne’s Orfeus Crystal Ice Avec Chezic (Imp CZE) B/W H/L dog of a nice size and a lovely temperament . Attractive in head with good bite and a dark almond eye. Good top line and a deep rib. Balanced with moderate bone. Moved ok

2nd Stainsby’s Riveralca Africa JW. B&W puff dog , Coat a little thick and wavy for my taste. Would have liked a little more angulation on rear and tail a little gay when moving. A happy soul who put a lot in. Good topline and a great temperament, shown in good condition.

Class 8 Post Graduate Dog 5 (5)

1st Be My Dog’s Jonker’s Bonkers For Epiphany (Imp DEU). An up to size true H/L dog with fabulous skin and what a neck! He had a pleasing head and a dark almond shaped eye. He was made well, with level top line, good angulation and well tucked in elbows. His movement was true and forceful and strong. Generally, a lot to like.

Class 9 Mid limit Dog 2 (1)

1st Coulter’s Scherzando Quill, A very flashy B&W true hairless dog with beautiful skin and in lovely condition generally. He had a good scull, and a lovely dark almond eye. His mouth was ok. Generally, well balanced and he has good angulation. He was a little erratic when moving more due to enthusiasm than anything else.

Class 10 Limit Dog 4 (3)

1st Seed’s Chundercrest Sir Lucifer. I really liked this dogs breed type. B&W H/L , He has a very pleasing head, chiselled cheeks, almond shaped dark eyes, Correct scissor bite was found under tight lips. He has fabulous ears, large and well placed. A found a level top line that he held at all times and a lovely tail set and carriage. Nicely angulated and moved freely with drive and reach.

2nd Moyes, Hunter – Ryan Shaw & Virta’s Bryelis The Star Man JW. An attractive puff with a nice outline. Good top line and angulation. Not enough body for me under the coat and sadly today, he wasn’t making the most of himself. Maybe a little stressed as I saw the owners enter quite late so possibly not enough time to settle.

1st Crow’s Ch. Kojiki’s Love To Hate Me at Casacavallow JW An up to size mahogany dog with lovely skin, Pleasing head with almond shaped eye Balanced head and clean cheeks and lips. He feels very hard and well-muscled to go over with good bone and body tone. He is overall very well balanced and a real showman, who loves his job. Although he is larger than I like, he is very good in confirmation and extremely sound., coupled with his showmanship, it’s hard to look past him. DCC

2nd Farquharson’s Shanshal Man of Steel JW A very attractive, erect eared puff with the correct veil coat. Again, an up to size dog but with a nice head and overall balance and well put together. I think he had the best neck of the day and he moved well.

3rd Routledge’s Valentino Von Shinbashi Del Pufflepaws

Class 12 Champion Dog 1 (1)

1st Crow’s Champion Kojiki’s Look of Love at Casacavallo Mahogany H/L dog with a nice head and lovely ears. Almond eye and clean cheeks and lips. Mouth OK. Again, very hard bodied and in very good condition. Balanced and well put together. Moved well but tail a little gay on move.

Class 8 Veteran Dog

1st Piper’s Be My Dog’s Topstail Cody of zanjero (Imp DEU) I’ve always liked this dog. He has traditional, some now would say old fashioned breed type. He is a true H/L mahogany boy who carries himself well. He has a nice head and eye and a good ear set. Adequate neck and good lay of shoulder. with a good topline and overall balanced, Elegant and graceful. I like his size.

2nd Ousbey’s Birchvolgyi Indigo Malverne ShCM (Imp HUN) Mahogany H/L , again, an older type boy with a lovely head and great ears. He has a a deep rib and overall balance, maintaining his top line at all times. Moved well.

Class 14 Baby Puppy Bitch 1 (1)

1st Routledge’s Pufflepaws Somnis Utopia A very attractive B&W H/l baby with beautiful skin and condition. She has a nice head , good ear set and an almond shaped, very dark eye. She has adequate neck and a good lay of shoulder. Very good rear angulation and moved well for a baby.

Class 15 Minor Puppy Bitch 2 (2)

I found both puppies of equal merit in this class and in the end, it went on performance.

1st Laws’ Karamouche All Dressed Up. A striking cream puff who is very well schooled for a youngster. Nice head, dark eye and good mouth. Good neck and lay of shoulder. Presented very well with a well-cared for, soft veil coat. She has a good body underneath for one so young. Moved very well. BPB

2nd Hellmuth’s Karamouche It’s my Party at Shumllea. H/L baby with lovely breed type, pushed her litter sister hard. She has a lovely head and eye and a good body shape. Kept her topline at all times. Very good angulation. Nice package.

2nd Walker’s Moelmo’s Black Velvet Avec Pet Walk (Imp Nor) A quality B&W puff girl, could have changed places with winner, it was a hard class. I liked her size and she has a beautiful, well cared for, veil coat. Her head was correct and very feminine. Lovely eye and good ears Firm little body, made well and moved well.

Class 17 Junior Bitch 2 (2)

1st Moyes, Shaw & Hunter – Ryan’s Bryelis Oops I Lost My Halo. Pretty and feminine mahogany H/L bitch. Very nice chiselled head and a dark almond . Correct ear set and a good mouth, scissor bite and correct dentition. Lovely neck with slight arch. I liked her balance in body and overall shape, beautifully angulated, front and rear. Her movement was excellent.

2nd O’Sullivan’s My Crazy Crested Polish Flower for Miatory. ( Imp Pol) A very attractive B&W H/L girl who has beautiful skin. Her head is pleasing with great ears, set well. Lovely dark eye and a good mouth. She has good construction and moves well. I would have liked a little more neck to finish the pretty picture.

Class 18 Yearling bitch. 3 (3)

1st Moyes, Shaw, Hunter-Ryan’s Bryelis Talking |about My Girl JW. Another very attractive H/L bitch with a wonderful temperament, and what a mover. She has a nice balanced head, chiselled and elegant. She had great ears, set well. Good mouth and lovely neck. Very sound on the move and maintained a level top line. Very good angulation front and rear Lovely shape and profile. Great breed type RBCC

2nd Lane’s Konishiki Omega. A nice young exhibit, with a pleasing head, great ears and a lovely dark eye. She has lovely skin and in a good condition. A very deep rib for a youngster, but generally very well put together. For me, I would have liked a tad longer in body, but a quality exhibit.

Class 20 Graduate Bitch 2 (2)

1st Hampson’s Zerachiel Air of Beauty A B&W puff who is mage very well. She has lots of substance and muscle on muscle. Hard to the touch. Slightly heavy in head but still attractive with a lovely dark eye. Great topline and a very good mover.

2nd O’sullivans Cladary Triumph History Star. (Imp LVA) H/L bitch, who for me was a little bit square and lacked substance. Pretty but twee. Out moved by the winner.

Class 21 Graduate Bitch 3 (3)

1st Hampson’s Zerachiel Air of Beauty

2nd Lane’s Konishiki Ventress. A H/L mahogany bitch with shaven ears. Head ok, a little short in neck for me. Well bodied but would like to see more angulation. A little erratic on the move.

Class 22. Mid Limit bitch 2(2)

Nice class, liked both girls.

1st Walker’s Petwalk Naked Attraction A very pretty mahogany H/L with a balanced and chiselled head. Almond eye and a good mouth. She is a lovely shape and has very good angulation that reflected in her movement. Lovely soft supple skin. Kept her topline at all times. Balanced throughout and good substance without being coarse.

2nd MCGuigan’s Annamac Black Tulip B&W H/L. A quality girl with many of the qualities of 1, but sadly erratic on the move and could do with the handler moving a little slower to quell the excitement. Lovely shape and angulation, put together well with a pleasing head.

Class 23 Limit Bitch 4 (3)

1st Moyes, Shaw, Hunter-Ryan Bryelis Oh I Wannabe Famous JW, I’ve written in my notes, Best Front Assembly of the day. A mahogany H/L with a lovely feminine head and almond eye and a good mouth. Balanced head, lots of furnishings. Her skin was soft and supple. She is a lovely shape and has great angulation front and rear, which reflected in her movement. Lovely to watch, elegant and graceful.

2nd MCGuigan’s Bryelis Made in Scotland for Anamac. B&W puff with a nice head. Good bite ans almond eye. Great ears and good overall balance. Moved well and kept her topline.

1st Frame’s Elfallons Crazy Moon ShCM. A 9 year old Mahogany and whit H/L looking absolutely fabulous! Very pleasing head and a good mouth. Lovely shape with adequate neck. Kept her topline at all times. Really liked her angulation, front and rear. Reflected in her movement.

Class 25 Champion bitch 4 (3)

1st Laws CH Karamouche Parti Frock JW. B&W puff with a great chiselled head, black almond eye and tight clean lips. Good length of neck and good lay of shoulders. Spirit level top line and a lovely shaped body, with adequate substance, under a very well kept, silky veil coat. Well angulated front and rear. She looks the business and does the job with an air of arrogance. Ahe moves very well and you just can’t look past her.

2nd Frame’s CH Myvallo Inclines to dance at Elfallons. 10 year old blue mahogany bitch. This owner keeps her oldies in top condition. I had to ask her age twice as I thought I had misheard. Cracking condition! She has a very pleasing head and overall breed type. A beautiful shape and moved very well!
